Programming around shift work and broken sleep

Most training advice assumes you sleep at night. On a rotation that advice is not slightly wrong, it is written for someone else.

Between sets, in the dark

Most training advice assumes you sleep at night and train at a consistent time. If you work a rotating shift, that advice is not slightly wrong, it is written for someone else. What follows assumes broken sleep is the constraint, not a temporary problem to fix.

Stop programming by the week

A seven-day plan assumes seven comparable days. On a rotation they are not comparable: two of them follow a night shift, one follows a double, and one is the day you change over. Plan in sessions, not weekdays. Three sessions completed in nine days beats five sessions scheduled and two completed.

Match the session to the sleep, not the calendar

After a normal sleep, train heavy: presses, carries, loaded squats, the sessions that need a nervous system. After short or broken sleep, do the long circuit at a moderate load. You will not set records, and that is not what the session is for; it maintains the pattern and the conditioning without asking for coordination you do not have that day.

After a night shift, before sleeping, do the least you will accept. Carries and step-ups for ten minutes. The purpose is continuity, not stimulus.

The goal on a rotation is not the best week you can build. It is the worst week you can survive without stopping.

Why one object matters more here than anywhere

Adherence on a rotation is destroyed by friction. A gym that closes, a drive, a locker, a class time — each is a place the session dies. A block in the bay or the trunk removes all of them. The session happens in the ten minutes that actually exist, or it does not happen at all, and the object should not be the reason it does not.

The floor, not the ceiling

Set a weekly minimum you would be embarrassed to miss and make it small enough that a bad rotation cannot take it from you. Two sessions. Everything above that is a good week. People on rotations do not fail because their ceiling was too low; they fail because a missed week turned into a missed month, and there was no floor to land on.

The object

Written for one object.
Here it is.

Every piece on this site assumes a steel block and a floor. Four loads, one footprint, made in the USA.
